Donald Trump asked a federal appeals court on Nov. 2, 2023, to put the brakes on a partial gag order in the federal election-interference case while he challenged it. The filing went to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and sought relief from a restriction imposed by District Judge Tanya Chutkan.

Chutkan’s order limited public comments about prosecutors, court staff and potential witnesses. It was designed to protect the integrity of the case, while Trump’s lawyers argued that it crossed a constitutional line by muzzling protected political speech and criticism of the prosecution.

The filing did not end the dispute. The D.C. Circuit later granted temporary relief on Nov. 3, then heard argument on Nov. 20 and issued a narrower ruling on Dec. 8, 2023. The court’s later order left some restrictions in place while trimming others, keeping the fight over Trump’s public remarks alive as the election case moved ahead.
