Vance sidesteps 2028 talk, says Rubio conflict is 'nothing to see here'
Vice President JD Vance brushed aside questions on February 17 about whether he might run for president in 2028 and whether that would put him on a collision course with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. On Fox News’ "The Story with Martha MacCallum," Vance declined to engage the speculation directly, said there was no conflict between him and Rubio, and described Rubio as a close friend.
The exchange came after recent talk about a possible future Republican ticket involving the two men. Vance’s answer was simple: he said his job now is to do the work in front of him, not to turn the calendar ahead to the next presidential race. He also said the administration’s focus should stay on governing rather than on sorting out future ambitions.
The substance of the moment was not dramatic. Vance did not announce a campaign, and he did not create a public rift with Rubio. But he did have to answer a question that will keep coming as long as both men remain prominent in the same administration: who, if anyone, is positioned to inherit the movement after Trump?
For now, Vance’s answer was to shrug off the premise and leave the future for later. That may be the safest line available in a White House where every prominent Republican gets measured against the next race before the current one is over.
