Trump’s address drew counterprogramming in Washington as Democrats staged their own response
Donald Trump’s Feb. 24 address to Congress came with a second stage in Washington: Democrats and allies organized counterprogramming meant to run alongside his remarks, not after them.
The response effort included a rally on the National Mall and other events in the Capitol area, giving lawmakers and activists a live forum to answer the president while he was still on television. The setup was deliberate. Trump had the chamber; his opponents worked the streets and public spaces nearby.
The split screen was the point. One side was the formal address. The other was a visible attempt to make sure the day was remembered as more than a White House script.
