FEC says April filing deadlines have passed, and late reports can still trigger fines
The Federal Election Commission’s April reporting reminder for 2026 was posted on March 30 and laid out a split set of deadlines for committees filing this month. House and Senate authorized committees, PACs, and quarterly presidential committees had to file by April 15. Monthly presidential filers and national party committees, along with other political committees on monthly schedules, were due April 20. The reminder also notes that quarterly filers involved in primary or special elections may have additional filing obligations. ([fec.gov](https://www.fec.gov/updates/april-reporting-reminder-2026/))
The agency is plain about who carries the burden. Committee treasurers are responsible for filing on time, and the FEC says not receiving a prior notice does not excuse a missed deadline. For electronic filers, a report has to be received and validated by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on the filing date; if it is not, the filer can be treated as a non-filer and face enforcement action, including administrative fines. Paper reports have their own delivery rules, and the FEC says it lacks authority to extend deadlines. ([fec.gov](https://www.fec.gov/updates/april-reporting-reminder-2026/))
The fine structure is not theoretical. In Administrative Fine Matter 4719, the commission found that Pulliam’s Committee failed to file its 2024 April Quarterly Report on time. The report was due April 15, 2024 and was filed May 5, 2024, 20 days late. The FEC ultimately assessed a $202 civil money penalty after applying the rules used in its administrative fine program. That leaves the basic lesson intact: the April 15 deadline has already passed for quarterly filers, the April 20 deadline still governs monthly filers, and the FEC’s own enforcement files show that a missed report can turn into a small but very real penalty. In campaign finance, the calendar is part of compliance, not decoration. ([fec.gov](https://www.fec.gov/updates/april-reporting-reminder-2026/))
