DOJ sues California over Glock-style handgun sales ban and roster
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against California on July 1, 2026, seeking to stop enforcement of the state’s new Glock ban and its handgun roster. The complaint names California and Attorney General Rob Bonta as defendants and says both policies violate the Second and Fourteenth Amendments. According to the Justice Department’s press release, California’s new law would bar the retail purchase of common handguns made by Glock and guns with similar firing mechanisms. The department also challenges the state’s handgun roster, which limits the types of handguns that may be sold legally in California. The department says the lawsuit is meant to prevent enforcement of both measures. ([justice.gov](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-sues-california-halt-glock-ban?utm_source=openai))
The complaint was filed in federal court on July 1, and the Justice Department’s public statement says the Civil Rights Division’s Second Amendment Section is handling the case. The department framed the suit as an effort to protect what it calls the constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to buy commonly owned handguns. California’s law and the roster remain in effect unless a court orders otherwise. ([justice.gov](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-sues-california-halt-glock-ban?utm_source=openai))
