The Daily Fuckup — January 24, 2019

Trump’s shutdown strategy hit a wall of its own making, with Senate votes, GOP defections, and an increasingly obvious lack of an exit ramp.

On January 24, 2019, Trump’s shutdown gamble kept collapsing in public. The Senate rejected both his wall-linked proposal and a Democratic reopening plan, six Republicans broke ranks, and the White House was forced to admit it had lost leverage just as the shutdown entered day 34. The political damage was already visible: the wall demand looked less like strength than a self-inflicted trap.

Closing take

By the end of the day, Trump still had the loudest megaphone in Washington. He just didn’t have a workable plan, a united party, or much of the country with him.
