The Daily Fuckup — January 30, 2019

Back in late January 2019, Trump’s border wall obsession was still chewing up the government, the congressional calendar, and whatever remained of the White House’s credibility on basic math.

On January 30, 2019, the Trump-world screwups were mostly variations on the same theme: the border wall fight was not getting cleaner, smarter, or more defensible. House Democrats put out a new border security plan with zero money for physical barriers, undercutting Trump’s demand that any deal include wall cash and making another shutdown fight look very much alive. At the same time, Trump kept digging in publicly and privately, which only reinforced the impression that he had driven himself into a corner after the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Closing take

This was the kind of day that made Trump’s border standoff feel less like strategy and more like a self-made trap. The White House wanted a wall; Congress was moving away from it; and the president’s favorite pressure tactic had already blown up in his face once. The result was not leverage. It was a warning sign.
