Trump’s Fraud Trial Turns Into a Face-Plant Rehearsal

Michael Cohen got the day’s biggest spotlight and used it to say Trump’s books were built on made-to-order lies. The rest of Trump’s day was mostly courtroom posture and self-inflicted damage.

October 24, 2023 was a very bad day for Donald Trump in Manhattan. His former fixer Michael Cohen testified that Trump ordered assets inflated to fit a number Trump had already picked, while Trump sat in the courtroom and waved it off as the ranting of a “proven liar.” The testimony went straight to the core of the New York attorney general’s fraud case and underscored how much of Trump’s business mythology now depends on witnesses saying the numbers were made up on purpose.

Closing take

Trump spent the day trying to turn a fraud trial into a character contest. Cohen instead turned it into a bookkeeping trial, which is a lot less glamorous and a lot more dangerous for a guy whose whole brand is that he’s the best businessman in the room.
