Butler man pleads guilty to Trump threat charges; sentencing set for Aug. 12
A Butler, Pennsylvania, man pleaded guilty in federal court on April 13, 2026, to threatening to assault and murder President Donald J. Trump, other U.S. officials and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, the Justice Department said. Shawn Monper, 33, entered the plea before U.S. District Judge W. Scott Hardy and admitted two counts tied to threats against federal officials and law enforcement officers. Under the plea agreement, he also accepted responsibility for the remaining counts in the indictment.
According to prosecutors, the case began after the FBI’s National Threat Operations Section received an emergency disclosure on April 8, 2025 about threatening posts on YouTube. Investigators tied the account to Monper’s residence in western Pennsylvania. The Justice Department said the posts at issue were made between Jan. 15, 2025, and April 5, 2025. In one February post, prosecutors said, Monper wrote, “Nah, we just need to start killing people, Trump, Elon, all the heads of agencies Trump appointed, and anyone who stands in the way...” In a mid-March post, he allegedly wrote, “ICE are terrorist people, we need to start killing them.”
The government also said Monper sought and obtained a firearms permit shortly after Trump’s inauguration. Prosecutors said he later posted that he had bought several guns, was stocking up on ammo and had been buying a gun a month since the election, along with body armor and ammunition. Monper was arrested on April 9, 2025, and has remained detained since then.
Judge Hardy scheduled sentencing for Aug. 12, 2026. The Justice Department said each count carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 or both, with any final sentence to be determined under federal guidelines.
