DOJ sues Connecticut and New Haven over immigration cooperation rules
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit on April 13, 2026, against Connecticut, Gov. Ned Lamont, Attorney General William Tong, New Haven and Mayor Justin Elicker, arguing that state and city immigration policies interfere with federal enforcement. The complaint targets Connecticut’s Trust Act and says the challenged rules are preempted by federal law and the Supremacy Clause. DOJ also says the suit is aimed at state and local policies that limit cooperation with immigration authorities. The filing says the dispute covers Connecticut’s Trust Act and other sanctuary policies. It frames those rules as barriers to federal immigration enforcement and says the state and city have obstructed cooperation with federal authorities. DOJ also says the case was filed in federal court in Connecticut and seeks to block the policies from taking effect against federal law. Connecticut officials responded on April 14, 2026, saying the lawsuit has no basis in law or fact. In a joint statement, Tong, Lamont and Elicker defended the Trust Act and New Haven’s Welcoming City policy, saying the state and city are following the law while protecting public safety and resident trust in law enforcement. Also on April 14, Sen. Richard Blumenthal called the suit a wasteful misuse of federal resources and said it was a political attack on Connecticut’s Trust Act and a federal overreach into state policy. The case now lands in federal court as a fight over how much cooperation Washington can demand from state and local agencies on immigration matters.
