Justice Department settles Carter Page’s claims against the United States
The Justice Department told the Supreme Court on April 22 that it had settled Carter Page’s claims against the United States in a case tied to surveillance during the Russia investigation. The court filing confirmed that the government reached a deal, but it did not give a dollar amount. AP reported that the settlement was worth $1.25 million. Claims Page brought against former FBI officials remain in the case. ([supremecourt.gov](https://www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?filename=%2Fdocket%2Fdocketfiles%2Fhtml%2Fpublic%2F25-705.html))
Page, who advised Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign on foreign policy, sued in 2020 over what he said was unlawful surveillance. He argued that FBI and Justice Department officials made errors and left out key information in applications to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He has denied any improper ties to Russia and was never charged in the Russia matter. ([apnews.com](https://apnews.com/article/0987c7480edfbce72ba5954ca057836f))
The settlement lands years after the original surveillance fight and after lower courts threw out Page’s lawsuit on timeliness grounds. The Supreme Court docket shows the government’s brief was filed while Page’s appeal was still pending, and the record now reflects that the United States is out of the dispute even as the remaining claims continue. The Page case followed a Justice Department inspector general report that found significant problems with the four surveillance applications. It also arrives after the government separately settled another Russia-probe-related claim with former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.
