The Daily Fuckup: July 11, 2024

Backfill edition for the day Trump-world kept trying to separate itself from its own mess while the mess kept talking back.

July 11 was a good day for Trump’s lawyers on paper and a bad day for Trump’s political reality. The hush-money sentencing that had been set for that date was already on hold after the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling, which bought him time but also kept the felony conviction hanging over the campaign. The bigger public self-own of the day was the Project 2025 problem: Trump went out of his way to deny the Heritage Foundation’s policy blueprint, only for the ecosystem around him to keep proving how flimsy that denial was. By the end of the day, the message gap was obvious, the backlash was growing, and the campaign was still trying to pretend it could wave away a plan it had spent years helping mainstream.

Closing take

Trump’s favorite trick is to call the problem fake and hope the cameras move on. On July 11, the cameras did not move on. The legal cloud stayed put, and the Project 2025 cloud got darker.

Ranked by how bad the fuckup was

5 stars means maximum fallout. 1 star means a smaller self-own.
