Federal prosecutors have two separate Trump-related cases moving on different timelines, and the dates matter.

In the Eastern District of North Carolina, a federal grand jury indicted Christopher James Hill, 32, of Wilmington on May 18, charging him with threatening President Donald Trump. Prosecutors say Hill posted public Facebook comments between October 3 and October 13, 2025, that contained threats to kill and injure the president. The FBI and Secret Service are investigating the case. Hill faces up to five years in prison if convicted. In Washington, a separate four-count indictment was issued in U.S. District Court on May 5 against Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, charging him with attempting to assassinate the president, assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon, transporting a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. DOJ says the indictment is tied to the April 25, 2026 shooting during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton, where Trump was present. Prosecutors say Allen rushed a security checkpoint, fired a shotgun, and hit a Secret Service officer in the chest.
