DOJ files denaturalization cases against 12 people in one announcement
The Justice Department said Friday, May 8, 2026, that it filed civil denaturalization actions against 12 people in federal courts around the country. In its announcement, the department said the cases involve allegations that the defendants concealed material facts tied to offenses including support for a terrorist group, war crimes, espionage, sexual abuse and other conduct that should have been disclosed during the naturalization process. The department said the actions were brought under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows citizenship to be revoked if it was illegally procured or obtained through concealment of a material fact or willful misrepresentation. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in the release that people who concealed criminal histories or otherwise misrepresented themselves during naturalization should face the fullest extent of the law. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate said the Civil Division continues to file denaturalization actions quickly to restore integrity to the naturalization process. The cases identified in the release include people accused of hiding involvement in or support for crimes ranging from terrorist activity to sexual abuse and war crimes. DOJ said the filings are civil cases and that the government is seeking to revoke citizenship and cancel certificates of naturalization where it says citizenship was unlawfully obtained. The department did not announce any criminal charges as part of the May 8 action itself. A separate DOJ press release on April 28, 2026, about former FBI Director James Comey is unrelated to the denaturalization filing and should not be read as part of the same event.
