The Justice Department filed a civil-rights lawsuit on May 26 against the University of California, accusing the system of deliberate indifference to race and national origin discrimination against Jewish and Israeli students at UCLA. The complaint says the university allowed an antisemitic hostile educational environment to continue after the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The filing lands as a separate case from the department’s earlier lawsuit on Feb. 24, 2026, which alleged that the University of California engaged in a hostile work environment against Jewish and Israeli faculty and staff at UCLA under Title VII. DOJ officials say the two actions come out of the same campus record but address different legal claims: one tied to employees, the other to students. In the May 26 complaint, DOJ says UCLA’s response to antisemitic incidents fell short of what federal civil-rights law requires. The department says the allegations include physical assaults, exclusion from campus spaces, and interference with students’ access to educational opportunities. DOJ also says the suit was filed in the Central District of California. The case now moves into federal court, where the government will have to prove its claims and the university will have a chance to answer them. For now, the filing adds a new layer to an already long-running dispute over how UCLA handled antisemitic harassment allegations after the Gaza war erupted, and what federal law requires schools to do once they say they know about it.
