On Wednesday, June 3, the Justice Department said it had opened a Title VI investigation into Arizona State University’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs. In its announcement, the Civil Rights Division said the probe was prompted by viral videos and that officials believe the footage may show students being treated differently based on race, color or national origin.

The department said investigators will review whether ASU’s policies or practices in admissions, recruitment, scholarships, tutoring and other support services violate federal civil-rights law. The release also said DOJ is looking at whether the university attempted to conceal discriminatory practices from federal review.

DOJ has not reached any conclusions, and the announcement does not accuse the university of a proven violation. At this stage, the agency has only said it is examining allegations raised in the videos and in the programs the department wants to review. The result will depend on what investigators collect and what ASU turns over in response.
