The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said on July 15, 2026, that it was taking final action under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 by imposing a 25% tariff on certain goods from Brazil. USTR said the move followed a yearlong investigation into Brazilian measures tied to digital trade and electronic payment services, tariffs, anti-corruption enforcement, intellectual property protection, ethanol market access and illegal deforestation. The agency said those measures were unreasonable and burdened U.S. commerce. USTR said the tariff became effective on July 22. In the same notice, the agency said the process included two public hearings, more than 360 public comments and negotiations with the Brazilian government before the final action was announced. USTR also said the investigation began on July 15, 2025, making the case a yearlong proceeding before the tariff was put in place. The agency’s notice framed the action as a response to practices it said were blocking U.S. farmers, workers, innovators and exporters from competing fairly in the Brazilian market. USTR said Brazil has more than 210 million consumers and that discussions with the Brazilian government did not resolve the dispute before the tariff order. A separate Section 301 action USTR announced on July 24 concerned forced-labor-related import bans across 60 economies. That was a different trade case and not part of the Brazil tariff action.
